28 Mar Amphibians in Monfrague National Park
Amphibians in Monfrague National Park were going many months of not much water, protected in small capsules of air, under stones, dead wood or directly underground, trying to avoid the sun, the heat and the summer drought in this Mediterranean ecosystem in Monfrague National Park.
During these months they haven´t moved, no feed, no related themselves, only they have been sleeping, which will be interrupted by the humidity of the first autumn rains.
This year was especially aggressive for the Amphibians in Monfrague National Park because there were almost three seasons of drought, disappearing many streams and ponds.
Because of that, the amphibians were impatiently wishing the arrival of some rains accompanied by soft temperatures that were moistening their backs and were allowing them to go out to feed and to mate.
For one month the temperatures and the rains marked the active life beginning of the Amphibians in Monfrague National Park.
The roads of Monfrague National Park were filling every night of Natterjack Toad, Mediterranean Common Toad, Mediterranean Tree Frog, Spanish Ribbed Newt and Southern Marbled Newt. The roads were frequented by these species and many more, whose were searching for mating and emitting there pheromones and sounds.
Unfortunately, many of these are knocked down every night.
Now, also it is possible to observe them in the daytime. So many small seasonal puddles have been filled with lays of several species, that can be recognized by the disposition and the shape of their eggs.
In Monfragüe Landscape estates we find every day an immensity of lays, though not everyone will become to be an adult, since eggs, larvae and tadpoles will be the food of many other species into this time, as Black Storks, Otters, Fishes, Herons … Species that can be observed feeding of them these days during our tours.
Because of that, in favour of the conservation of Extremadura amphibians, since we are in the most exclusive and preserved Monfrague area, from Monfragüe Landscape we support the protection of these ponds, resources of life, that they are the meeting point of different amphibians species with a great value.
Also, we give you the opportunity to enjoy our tours in this private part of Monfrague National Park and Biosphere Reserve, and this way to know one of the most impressive and best-preserved areas of Monfrague.
